Honestly i think hitchiking if it could would be more widely used in this day and age. Yet there are laws against it. Although it is still done so obviously it is very important to some peoples lives. I too have not thought a lot about hitchiking, but i believe it is much more dangerous now day than it was in the past. In the past getting raped or killed probably wouldnt even cross a persons mind when getting in a car with another person. Personally i would never hitchike i would be way too scared. I would much rather walk than getting in a car with a stranger. I wish times were how they used to be where a person could easily trust another, but of course times have to change and there is nothing we can do about that.
I do think to some people hitchiking is beneficial, but others very dangerous and not needed. Some its their only form of transportation like McCandless.
I feel like people who hitchhike today on regular basis are a lot like Chris and just looking for an adventure. And the more I think about it, we were taught from the time we were in elementary school not to get into cars with strangers and even now, to get into a car with somebody we have never met just seems counter-intuitive. Overall, I think that there are a lot safer ways to get around than hitchhiking.
ReplyDeleteWhen you compare the life we live today to the life our grandparents or even parents lived is much different. we have goolge, phones, texting, web surfing, we have buses, skateboards, electric scooters, we have all different forms of new things. my mom had a pet rock, so it is VERY clear that it is different. however, I wish the safety didn't have to be like that. I would i could trust people enough to let a hitchhiker in my car or to pick one up. That is something that I wish we could have in this life, it is scary how we have lost trust from the world. Media plays a huge factor. it has instilled fear into people, including myself
ReplyDeleteI agree. With the economy in slump, transportation is vital nowadays. Many people cant afford rides, and have no choice but to walk. I know hitchhiking would be used more today but since laws prohibit it, it rarely occurs. Obviously hitchhiking was used back in the earlier days because people were friendly about it, and because there were no laws. I would definately not get in a car with some stranger either. I would maybe on a desperation attempt.
ReplyDeleteI don't know that more people would hitchike if there weren't laws against it. Everyone is so paranoid about their safety that I don't think they would pick up a stranger. If I were driving down the road and saw someone standing there with there thumb up, there is no way that I would stop to pick them up. I do agree that getting into a strangers car would not be the right thing to do. You have no idea who the person that picked you is.
