I think that Gallien did not feel he was in the position to tell the cops what was going on. Gallien believed that Chris seemed like a normal young adult that obviously was on a mission of some sort. It is hard to go out of your way to help a complete stranger, especially if they didnt even hint at wanting help. Gallien was put into a very difficult situation, but i think he got the vibe that Chris didnt want any help and that what he was doing needed to be done for some sort of reason. Besides Gallien thought that Chris would be like any other person and just run away for a little while and come back when he was ready. If Gallien called the police it wouldnt have solved anything. Growing up i have had many instances where i just wanted to get away and not be bothered...id want to go somewhere knew about so i could just be with myself and if someone told on me while i was trying to have alone time i would hate that. Gallien did the right thing it really wasnt his place because he had no idea why Chris was going into the wild.
I totally agree with you! I think Gallien did the right thing too. It wasn't really his place to tell anybody and had he told someone, Chris would've known it was Gallien who told. I do feel bad for Gallien because I bet that today he regrets not telling anybody, even though it wasn't his fault. Chris seemed to know what he was in for and I agree that Gallien was just trying to mind his own business.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about telling someone would have accomplished nothing. Chris was determined to do this, so nothing was going to stop him. Sometimes it is nice to get away from everything and have some peace and quiet. If I were Chris and felt that I wasn't going to make it much longer, I would just turn around and leave, so your assumption would be true for most people.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that you said that Chris did not respond to any of the hints Gallien gave him to help, is so true. Gallien made an effort and once the offer has been set out that is as far as he can go. especially as a stranger. There is a fine line between getting into peoples business and making the right decision. Personally, I dont think I would call the cops, but at the same time I am not the person who would pick up a stranger. Gallien did enough by picking him up I think.
ReplyDeleteThis topic can go two ways. I agree with you and what most people would do, which is to let Chris go and beleive in what he wishes to believe in. However, when your in the sub zero degree Alaskan forest, you will feel the urge to get him out of there. Of course Gallien tried to talk him out of it, as would I. But when he let him go, it may seem like the right idea at the time, but after a couple of days, i would definately call for help.
